Calculating a tip and splitting the bill fairly

A tip, also called a gratuity, is an extra payment to thank service staff. Customs differ widely: in India a service charge may already be added to the bill, while in the United States 15 to 20 per cent is common. This calculator works out the tip, the total and each person's share in a few seconds.

The formulas

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100. Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ Number of people. For a ₹2,400 bill with a 10% tip split among 4 friends, the tip is ₹240, the total is ₹2,640 and each person pays ₹660.

Check the bill first

• Look for a service charge already printed. Adding a tip on top is optional, not required.
• Decide whether to calculate the tip before or after taxes. Many people use the pre-tax amount.
• Rounding up the total to a neat figure is a common and convenient habit.

Splitting unevenly

If one person ordered much more, split by what each consumed instead of equally. Calculate each person's own items, add a proportional share of tax and tip, and compare the sum with the real bill to confirm nothing is missing.

Typical ranges

Restaurants in India often see 5 to 10 per cent where tipping is practised, with cash handed directly to staff. Abroad, check local custom before travelling, because some countries include service in the price and tipping may be unnecessary. Use the percentage buttons or type your own figure.
